Geirfa - Vocab Builder

This is a freeware utility that I wrote (in Visual BASIC 3.0) to help me learn vocabulary. It includes a few vocab files to get you started but also has a utility for adding your own. It also has a special on-screen "keypad" for entering the accented Welsh vowels.

Download the zip file (~10k)
If you don't already have it on your system you will need a copy of vbrun300.dll (~400k)
Here are some extra vocabulary files kindly provided by Adam Greenow
- Adjectives (~1.5k)
- Family words - relations etc (~1k)
- Weather conditions (~0.7k)

Instructions

Read the disclaimer.
Download the geirfa.zip file and unzip it into an empty directory.
If you dont already have a copy of vbrun300.dll download that too and either put it into the same directory as the geirfa files or put it into a directory that is in your path statement.
Start the program:
- Click on the geirfa.exe file from file manager or explorer to launch the program with the vocab1.txt file as the active test file.
- To use a different test file specify that file on the command line. e.g select File-Run and type "geirfa anifail.txt"
The program supports the following functions:
- You can type the Welsh equivalent of the English prompt word into the black box.
- You can use the keypad at the bottom-right of the window to enter accented Welsh vowels.
- If you are stuck the "Help Me!" button will provide the first letter of the answer as a clue.
- When you have completed your answer press the "Done" button or the ENTER key.
- The "How did I do?" button tells you your current score.
- The "Add Vocab" button allows you to type new vocabulary into the current test file. The accented vowel keypad is available to help you. The new vocab will not be used for testing until you restart the program. You can also create test files by typing them directly into a text editor such as notepad. The format is simple:

  That is "welsh"<comma>"english"<carriage return>. This is the best way of starting a completely new file.

I have tested the software on British English versions of Windows 3.11, Windows 95 and NT4.0 without problems. You are welcome to use this software without paying any kind of fee. If you create any new vocab files perhaps you could attach or include them in your email message and I will make them available to other users (with proper acknowledgement of course!)
